This book presents research on the dietary and technological exploitation of the remains of artiodactyls, Hippocamelus bisulcus (huemul) and Lama guanicoe (guanaco) from the heterogeneous archaeological contexts of the Middle and Late Holocene in Chile. Specific archaeozoological and technological analyses demonstrate the different stages linked to the processing of these two species from disarticulation to the fracture of long bones and phalanges to obtain marrow as a food resource. Results of long bone fractures allowed us to link patterns of grinding to obtain supports and subsequent technological processes for the manufacture of a wide variety of bone artifacts. The analyses made it possible to determine technological processes for the treatment of bones, applied indifferently to one species or another for the elaboration of the bone industry, thus complementing a comprehensive study and the proposal of global operational treatment chains by hunter-gatherer groups in Fuego Patagonia. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Bioarchaeological analysis of an anencephalic fetus from the archaeological site cueva de los ninos (ultima esperanza, magallanes, chile): 29 years after its discovery AnÔlisis bioarqueológico de un feto anencefÔlico del sitio arqueológico cueva de los niños (provincia de última esperanza, región de magallanes, Chile): A 29 años de su hallazgo2019 ;Palacios C., CristóbalThe re-evaluation of human bones from the Cueva de los Ninos site located in the province of Ultima Esperanza, Chile, is presented. This work focuses on deepening the analysis of the anencephalic fetus called Ultima Esperanza A, sustained by the availability of new methods for the analysis of bone material and by the presence of unstudied remains from the individual. After estimating the age using new regression equations and considering the alterations produced by fetal neurological defects in the development of long bones, we suggest the possibility that the age of the fetus is between one or two weeks less than that proposed previously. New bioanthropological data on the individual are provided, emphasizing its importance and the few documented cases of anencephalic fetuses found in archaeological contexts worldwide. Finally, the possibility that the individual Ultima Esperanza A and the other fetus found at the site (Ultima Esperanza B) were born from a multiple pregnancy is discussed, based on the possible lower age difference between them and the higher incidence of anencephaly in these cases.Scopus© Citations 1 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publicación DOI 10.1080/15564894.2019.1643429A Novel Child Burial from Tierra del Fuego: A Preliminary Report2020-7-2 ;Prieto, Alfredo; ;Cardenas, Pedro; ;Calas, Elisa ;Christensen, Marianne ;Lefevre, Christine ;Laroulandie, Veronique; Ramirez, OscarThis paper reports the archaeological materials from a unique child burial recently discovered in Tierra del Fuego. Preliminary analyses are consistent with the idea that the burial belongs to the Selk'nam culture. Although the Selk'nam archaeological record is abundant, very little is known about their mortuary practices. In this well-preserved burial, the human remains were accompanied by an unusual set of grave goods, which have not been described in the archaeological literature for this region. Radiocarbon dating places this burial at the beginning of the Post-Columbian period in Tierra del Fuego (331-499 cal BP). Analyses presented herein include information on the sex, diet, and genetics of the child, which provided the first genetic evidence for the presence of mitochondrial sub-haplogroup D1g5 in the Selk'nam population in Tierra de Fuego. We also provide a detailed description of the cultural materials, which include mammal and bird bones and lithic material. This is a unique find because it possesses a wealth of archaeological materials that are previously unknown in the region.Scopus© Citations 6 3 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Alimentary and technological processing of guanacos (lama guanicoe) during the late holocene: The case of coastal site marazzi 32 (Tierra del Fuego, Chile) Procesamiento alimenticio y tecnológico de guanacos (Lama guanicoe) durante el Holoceno tardĆo: El caso del sitio costero Marazzi 32 (Tierra del Fuego, Chile)2019-8-1; ; ;Massone, MauricioPalacios, CristóbalThe analysis of the guanaco assemblage recovered from Marazzi 32 archaeological site, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, is presented. The site, dated between 560 and 635 BP, is noteworthy for its record of cetacean bones, mostly found on the surface, and the prevalence of guanacos in relation to other marine mammals, birds and taxa. Results confirmed the importance of guanaco remains in the subsistence and supply of bone raw material, supporting the economic theory that has traditionally considered that land resources played a fundamental role for human groups during the late Holocene. The significance of guanaco exploitation at the site, the greater number of young individuals, and the exploitation strategies, food chain, and technological management of the species are discussed.ScopusĀ© Citations 7 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
