Peptide-based drug discovery through artificial intelligence: towards an autonomous design of therapeutic peptides2024-06-10 ;Goles, Montserrat ;Daza, Anamaria ;Cabas-Mora, Gabriel ;Sarmiento-Varon, Lindybeth; ;Anvari-Kazemabad, Hoda ;Davari, Mehdi D.; ;Olivera-Nappa, AlvaroNavarrete, Marcelo A.With their diverse biological activities, peptides are promising candidates for therapeutic applications, showing antimicrobial, antitumour and hormonal signalling capabilities. Despite their advantages, therapeutic peptides face challenges such as short half-life, limited oral bioavailability and susceptibility to plasma degradation. The rise of computational tools and artificial intelligence (AI) in peptide research has spurred the development of advanced methodologies and databases that are pivotal in the exploration of these complex macromolecules. This perspective delves into integrating AI in peptide development, encompassing classifier methods, predictive systems and the avant-garde design facilitated by deep-generative models like generative adversarial networks and variational autoencoders. There are still challenges, such as the need for processing optimization and careful validation of predictive models. This work outlines traditional strategies for machine learning model construction and training techniques and proposes a comprehensive AI-assisted peptide design and validation pipeline. The evolving landscape of peptide design using AI is emphasized, showcasing the practicality of these methods in expediting the development and discovery of novel peptides within the context of peptide-based drug discovery.Scopus© Citations 101 30 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Psychometric properties of the questionnaire for needs of family members of patients hospitalized in critical units, abbreviated version Propiedades psicométricas del cuestionario de necesidades de familiares de pacientes hospitalizados en unidades críticas, versión abreviada2017-12-01 ;Villalobos Aburto, Lidia Romina ;Osorio Spuler, Ximena OdetteValdebenito Santana, José LuisThe admission of a patient to the Intensive Care Unit has an effect on its inner family circle, the access to information and an empathic treatment being some of the needs of the relatives of the patient in this unit. The short version of the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI) allows to evaluate the satisfaction of those needs by the relatives of the patients in this units and it is considered a useful tool to obtain an overview of this group. Objective: To describe the cultural adaptations and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the short version of the CCFNI in hospitalized patients' relatives in Dr. Hernán Henríquez Aravena's Hospital, Temuco, Chile. Method: This research uses a cross-sectional survey design. The tool was first culturally adapted and then applied to 77 relatives during the time span of five months, after a written consent was provided. Validity of the construct and reliability of the tool are determined. Results: Items 11 and 14 were excluded. The exploratory factorial analysis showed four components whose Alphas of Cronbach were 0.7; 0.7; 0.6 and 0.3. Conclusion: The translation and adapted version applied must continue its psychometric study incorporating a bigger number of relatives of hospitalized patients to confirm the exclusion of items and to check its multidimensional structure. This instrument is a tool to value the needs of relatives of patients hospitalized in Critical Units. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

HUNTER-GATHERER HEARTHS FROM THE NORTH OF TIERRA DEL FUEGO DURING THE LATE HOLOCENE: CONTEXTS AND ANTHRACOLOGY2017 ;Massone, MauricioEugenia Solari, MariaContextual information from five archaeological sites and its hearths are evaluated. They are located in Marazzi and Tres Arroyos localities, within the valley of glacial origin that connects Inutil and San Sebastian bay, from the north of Tierra del Fuego. Anthracological analysis done on the basis of charcoal from these hearths linked to selk'nam affiliation and their predecessors are evaluated. The chronological range is between approximately 1.218 and 93 years cal. BP. An interpretation of these records is presented.Scopus© Citations 6 2 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

ASSESSMENT OF AN EAST-WEST PHENOTYPIC VARIATION IN BODY HEIGHT, BODY FORM AND BODY MASS AMONG PREHISTORIC HUNTER-GATHERERS OF PATAGONIA AND TIERRA DEL FUEGO, CHILE2017 ;Alfonso-Durruty, Marta ;Giles, Bretton T.; Fuego-Patagonia's marine and terrestrial groups were historically described as phenotypically distinct but, studies of these phenotypic differences have yet to be conducted. This study evaluates phenotypic variation in Fuego-Patagonia. Phenotypic disparities result from extrinsic and intrinsic factors and therefore can reveal differences in both long and short term adaptations as well as genetic differences. Fifty-one adults were assessed. A total of six post-cranial measurements were included: maximum length of the humerus (MHL); maximum length of the radius (MRL); Bicondylar length of the femur (BFL); Maximum length of the tibia (MTL); bi-iliac breadth (BIB), and; antero-posterior diameter of the femoral head (FHD). Brachial index, crural index, body mass, body mass index and stature were then calculated. In general, terrestrial individuals had longer lower limb bones and were the tallest and heaviest. Marine individuals had the shortest bones and were shorter and lighter. Mixed-economy individuals showed mostly intermediate values. The trends are more marked in males than in females. The results suggests the presence of an east-to-west phenotypic gradient in the region that may have resulted from intrinsic and/or extrinsic differences between the groups. But, the sample size of this study is small, and thus the results should be cautiously considered.Scopus© Citations 8 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Seasonal benthic patterns in a glacial Patagonian fjord: the role of suspended sediment and terrestrial organic matter2016-12-15 ;Quiroga, Eduardo ;Ortiz, Paula ;Gonzalez-Saldias, Rodrigo ;Reid, Brian ;Tapia, Fabian J. ;Perez-Santos, Ivan ;Rebolledo, Lorena ;Mansilla, Rodrigo ;Pineda, CarlosCari, IliaComplex marine-terrestrial interactions characterize Chilean fjords, where benthic communities influence the distribution of organic matter (OM). We examined spatial and seasonal changes in the hydrography, sediment conditions and soft-bottom macrobenthic, meiobenthic, and total microbial biomass in a glacial Patagonian fjord (Martinez Channel, Chile). The transport of a high load of glacial mineral and particulate OM to the fjord in the austral summer coincided with low total live benthic biomass. Multivariate analysis evidenced temporal-related macrofaunal groups influenced by the different environments produced by the advection of sediment transport and terrestrial OM from the Baker River, Chile. The relationships between density/biomass and respiration versus body size varied considerably with distance from major riverine inputs, but the slopes of density size spectra and normalized biomass size spectra were less negative in summer than in winter. Occasional large-scale advective processes in the water column affected sediment conditions and removed surface macrofauna, influencing the slope and intercept of the regression models. In the outer fjord, lateral advection and subsequent sedimentation of terrestrial OM contributed a significant fraction to total OM sediments (< 14.76%). Stable carbon isotopes measured in benthic organisms suggest that benthic communities in the inner fjord may assimilate a significant fraction of terrestrial OM via heterotrophic bacteria in contrast to the minor input of terrestrial OM in the outer fjord.Scopus© Citations 32 2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Heritage Governance and Adaptive Reuse in Southern Chile: Case Studies from Lota and Punta Arenas2025-09-09 ;Lopez, M. Isabel; Ibarra, MacarenaIn recent decades, the redefinition of heritage has led to research focused on the governance and management of heritage reuse, particularly emphasizing the role of communities in these processes. This article examines the influence of new uses and the participation of social stakeholders in fostering sustainable reuse and inclusive governance. Drawing on a qualitative methodology-combining documentary sources and interviews with key stakeholders-this study analyzes two heritage sites in the southern Chilean cities of Lota and Punta Arenas, using a critical heritage framework. The findings suggest that a hybrid model of collaboration between public institutions and civil society organizations positively contributes to the sustainability of heritage reuse. A key challenge identified is ensuring the sustained engagement of these diverse stakeholders in the long-term administration of heritage sites.2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
