    Aim Marine habitats and their dynamics are difficult to systematically monitor, particularly those in remote locations. This is the case with the sub-Antarctic ecosystem of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, which was already noted by Charles Darwin in his accounts on the Voyage of the Beagle and recorded on the nautical charts made during that expedition. We combined these and other nautical charts from the 19th and early 20th centuries with surveys conducted in the 1970s and 1980s and satellite detection algorithms from 1984 to 2019, to analyse kelp distribution through time and the factors that correlate with it. Location Marine ecoregions of Channels and Fjords of Southern Chile, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), and the island of South Georgia. Taxon Macrocystis pyrifera. Methods We characterised 309 giant kelp forests by their coastal geospatial attributes. Statistically significant variables were included in a conditional inference tree to predict kelp forest size. Sea surface temperature (SST) records were analysed to confirm temperature ranges over the last four decades. Nautical charts, historical surveys, aerial photogrammetry, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys and satellite imagery were overlaid to assess spatial distribution of kelp forest canopies, spanning the period 1829-2020. Results Considering the extensive natural and human caused changes over the last two centuries, this diverse kelp ecosystem is remarkably persistent. We found that the ocean currents and wave exposure, combined with the geomorphological settings of the coastline are the most critical factors predicting the extent of the kelp forests. Main conclusions We have described the long-term ecological persistence of the kelp forests in this vastly under-studied region that offers a conceptual biogeographical model supporting the global importance proposed by Charles Darwin 200 years ago (Darwin, 1845). In the current context of global change, the need for conservation of this persistent and well-preserved marine ecosystem has never been more important.

    Balance LOICZ de nitrógeno y fósforo para un Ôrea marina proglacial: Influencia de la variación pluviométrica en el flujo de nutrientes

    Resumen: Se estimó por primera vez el flujo y balance de nitrógeno inorgÔnico disuelto y fósforo inorgÔnico disuelto en el Seno Gallegos (Cordillera Darwin). AdemÔs, se evaluó la respuesta de estos procesos bajo dos condiciones de pluviosidad, una por sobre y por debajo el promedio local histórico. Para estimar el flujo y balance de los nutrientes, se utilizó un modelo LOICZ de dos capas. Los datos primarios de concentración de nitrógeno y fósforo fueron obtenidos de muestras de agua, las cuales fueron recolectadas durante otoño, invierno y primavera del 2010 en el Seno Gallegos. En la capa superficial del Seno Gallegos el balance de nitrógeno inorgÔnico disuelto mostró un consumo y salida de nutrientes. Mientras que el flujo vertical es predominantemente desde la capa profunda hacia la superficial. El balance fósforo del Seno Gallegos fue negativo para la capa superior y positivo en la capa profunda. Bajo una condición de mayor pluviosidad, el balance y flujo de nutrientes se vería intensificado, junto con un incremento de la fijación de nitrógeno y metabolismo neto. Mientras que, bajo una condición de menor pluviosidad, estos procesos se verían disminuidos. Dada la relación directa entre las variaciones del volumen de hielo glaciar y las Ôreas marinas proglaciales, estas últimas son altamente sensibles al cambio climÔtico, por lo que mayores estudios sobre estas Ôreas son de gran importancia para entender las fuerzas que gobiernan estos ecosistemas estuarinos fríos.

    Seasonal dynamics of meroplankton in a sub-Antarctic fjord (Southern Patagonia, Chile)
    2021-5

    ;
    Knowledge of seasonal dynamics and composition of meroplankton (larvae of benthic invertebrates) is rather limited for sub-Antarctic regions. We studied the seasonal dynamics of meroplankton in a sub-Antarctic proglacial basin (Gallegos Sound, Chile), by examining changes in the meroplankton community in relation to hydrographic variables along four sampling cruises between early winter 2010 and late winter 2011. The local meroplankton community was composed of 39 larval morphotypes distributed among 11 major taxa, being polychaetes the best represented (15 larvae morphotypes), and bivalve the most abundant. We found distinct seasonal differences in terms of meroplanktonic composition and abundance, with higher abundance and larval morphotype number during austral spring and late winter, and lower in summer and early winter. The pattern observed for meroplankton was directly related to seasonal variations of fluorescence of chlorophyll a and temperature. We found meroplankton abundances lower than those of other sub- and Polar environments. However, meroplanktonic temporal dynamics showed a common pattern for sub- and Polar fjords, suggesting a strong link between benthic spawning and the occurrence of phytoplankton blooms.
